Unspoken 2
Unspoken 2 is a portfolio of photographs made in 2023 that revisits the style and form of my earlier Unspoken project of 2016. In the original series, feature, expression, and individuality are erased, and body language and the visual cues of posture and gesture become the keys to creating the narrative. Couples are seen in dark amorphous spaces with the figures separated in the frame and looking away from each other, suggesting a disconnect or tension between them. The Unspoken 2 portfolio also shows pairs of individuals with features erased, but their interactions have a wider range; some of the pairs are looking toward each other and are clearly connected, others suggest longing or a desire to become connected, and some indicate the same tensions and distance as the earlier series. While the original Unspoken images have backgrounds that are dark or even night scenes, the tones and colors of the spaces in Unspoken 2 are different as well: the work was made in anticipation of an exhibition at Dolby Chadwick gallery in San Francisco, and the palettes give a nod to the light and colors of the Bay Area and its artists.
